No Power. No Playoff win for Blenheim Blades
It was late in February, 2014, when the Bleinhem Blades were playing the Belle River Canadiens in game three of the Great Lakes Junior ‘C’ Hockey League semi-final. Leading the game 5-4 with just under five minutes remaining in the game, the Blades had fought their way back from a 3-0 deficit and were ready to take the lead in the best of seven series.
Then, the power went out. A car had hit a hydro pole that blacked out most of the Belle River community. The arena was dark. And, not only was the game called – the result was wiped out. The game was replayed – from the very beginning – three days later. This time Belle River won.
Power workers from the local electrical utility serving the area quickly went into action to get it restored. And when the game was replayed in Blenheim, Entegrus had crews on standby in the unlikely event of another incident. Still, for the Blades and their fans, it was a clear reminder of what can be on the line.
